Kalapi - Some poems 1

Here I present the compilation of some of the works of Kalapi .An attempt by me has been made to simplify the understanding of the poetry by presenting tough meanings . Then too if you have any difficulty in understanding any word or phrase , feel free to comment.

                                To begin with his most famous and celebrated poem                                     

                 

                 

             જ્યાં જ્યાં નજર મ્હારી ઠરે

                          જ્યાં જ્યાં નજર મ્હારી ઠરે યાદી ભરી ત્યાં આપની,
                               આંસુ મહીં એ આંખથી યાદી ઝરે છે આપની!

                                માશૂકોના ગાલની લાલી મહીં લાલી, અને
                                જ્યાં જ્યાં ચમન જ્યાં જ્યાં ગુલો ત્યાં ત્યાં નિશાની આપની!

                                જોઉં અહીં ત્યાં આવતી દરિયાવની મીઠી લહર,
                                તેની ઉપર ચાલી રહી નાજુક સવારી આપની!

                                તારા ઉપર તારા તણાં ઝૂમી રહ્યાં જે ઝૂમખાં,
                                તે યાદ આપે આંખને ગેબી કચેરી આપની!

                               આ ખૂનને ચરખે અને રાતે હમારી ગોદમાં,
                               આ દમબદમ બોલી રહી ઝીણી સિતારી આપની!

                               આકાશથી વર્ષાવતા છો ખંજરો દુશ્મન બધા,
                              યાદી બનીને ઢાલ ખેંચાઇ રહી છે આપની!

                              દેખી બૂરાઇ ના ડરું હું, શી ફિકર છે પાપની?
                              ધોવા બૂરાઇને બધે ગંગા વહે છે આપની!

                               થાકું સિતમથી હોય જ્યાં ના કોઇ ક્યાં એ આશના,
                               તાજી બની ત્યાં ત્યાં ચડે પેલી શરાબી આપની!

                               જ્યાં જ્યાં મિલાવે હાથ યારો ત્યાં મિલાવી હાથને,
                               અહેસાનમાં દિલ ઝૂકતું, રહેમત ખડી ત્યાં આપની!

                               પ્યારું તજીને પ્યાર કોઇ આદરે છેલ્લી સફર,
                               ધોવાઇ યાદી ત્યાં રડાવે છે જુદાઇ આપની!

                              રોઉં ન કાં એ રાહમાં બાકી રહીને એકલો?
                              આશકોના રાહની જે રાહદારી આપની!

                                જૂનું નવું જાણું અને રોઉં હસું તે તે બધું,
                               જૂની નવી ના કાંઇ તાજી એક યાદી આપની!

                             ભૂલી જવાતી છો બધી લાખો કિતાબો સામટી,
                            જોયું ન જોયું છો બને જો એક યાદી આપની!

                             કિસ્મત કરાવે ભૂલ તે ભૂલો કરી નાખું બધી,
                            છે આખરે તો એકલી ને એ જ યાદી આપની!

                                 સનમ ને  (ગઝલ)

                                                            યારી ગુલામી શું કરું તારી સનમ !
                                                ગાલે ચૂમું કે પ્હાની એ તુને સનમ !

                                                તું આવતા ચશ્મે જીગર મારું ભરે ,
                                                જતા મગર શું શું કરી રોકું ? સનમ ..

                                                તું ઈશ્ક છે , યા મહેરબાની યા રહમ ,
                                                હસતા ઝરે મોતી લબે તે શું? સનમ ..

                                                મહેંદી કદમ ની જોઈ ના પૂરી કદી,
                                                આવી ન આવી એમ શું? થતી સનમ ..

                                                તારી સવારી ફૂલ ની ક્યાં ક્યાં ફરે?
                                               તેનો બનું ભમરો , બની શું શું ? સનમ !

                                                 છે દિલ્લગી નો શોખ કે તુને નહિ ?
                                                 તો આમ કા? કા બોલ ના આવી સનમ !!

                                                આ ચશ્મ ની તુને ચદર ખુચે નક્કી ,
                                               કોને બિછાને તું સદા પોંઢે ? સનમ !

                                                તુને કહું ખાવિંદ તો રીઝે નહિ !
                                                ત્યાયે હંસે તું દુર ની દૂરે સનમ!

Kalapi :The poet of love

On  Google very less information about this great poet  , writer  ,philosopher and his work is given . I have tried my best to compile everything about him 

Sursinhji Takhtasinhji Gohil (Gujarati:સુરસિંહજી તખ્તસિંહજી ગોહિલ) (popularly known as Kalapi (Gujarati:કલાપી) is a renowned name in Gujarati literature. He lived in Lathi-Gohilwad, which is located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat.He was born to a royal family in 1874. He had a very short life of 26 years, and died in 1900. When Kalapi was 15 years old, he was married to two princesses. Rajba-Ramaba, the princess of Kutch - Roha, and Kesharba-Anandiba, the Princess of Saurashtra-Kotada. Ramaba was elder to Sursinhji by eight years, while Anandiba was elder to him by two years. When he was 20 years old, he fell in love with Shobhana, who was serving as a maid to his royal family. It is believed that, Kalapi's love for Shobhana became the reason of conflicts with Ramaba, and then the reason for his accidental death due to poisoning by his own wife.

In spite of his short life, poet Kalapi's creation was immense and enormous. His creation includes about 250 poems (including 15,000 verses). He has also given a number of prose writings. His 900 letters to his friends and wives brought the facts and truth. He not only used Gujarati language as his medium to elaborate his own creation, but also translated four English novels in Gujarati.

In his relatively short life, he still managed to mentor a minor number of budding poets, who carried on his style of writing, becoming very famous in their own right. The most prominent among these was Kavi Lalitji, who was about the same age as Kalapi, and already an established poet, when he was invited to the Lathi Darbar as a tutor for the Royal children. He came under Kalapi's influence, the two became great friends, and Kavi Lalitji went on to become the Rajya Kavi (Royal Bard) of Lathi.

All of Kalapi's creations, reading, study and achievements were packed by Kavi Lalitji during the period of his age from 16 years to 26 years.

Kavi Kalapi had written poems in various Chhand of Gujarati language. Like Mandakranta, Shardulvikridit, Shikharini etc. To write poem in particular Chhand, one has to follow the structure of that chhand and the rules of chhandas poem. Kavi kalapi is the only poet who has written maximum number of poems in these chhands.

Today, a museum has been set up in the present Lathi town, where visitors can gather more information about Kavi Kalapi's life and the history of Gohelwad Kingdom.
